I have completed 11-12th class NCERT bio. Is this enough?
ReplyDeleteNo not enough.
DeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteNCERT is a devious book.
Last year I had made it to the camp, and several stuents there told me hat NCERT was the only textbook they had followed, however, this was not the case with me.
yes of course it is!!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe that's enough for NSEB.
ReplyDeleteis nseb very tough ?? ncert is enough rite?
ReplyDeleteNo, its not tough. Just use clear reasoning, and sharp thinking.
DeleteBiology is one of the most logical sciences, and it doesn't have any formulae either, tough bnane ka scope hi kya rehta hai.
And if you don't let the pressure get to you, you'll score very well, sadly, this is what happened with me this year. :(
C'mon guys, start posting ur marks, so that cut off can be guessed!
ReplyDeleteStrictly following the answers published by Resonance, though many of them are definitely absurd, I'm scoring 132.
Hey Pratyush!
DeleteFollowing the Resonance key, my score's 141.
Totally agree about the absurdness. Happy to know that I'm not the only one who feels it to be so!
144..acc to resonance answer key though mot satisfied :(
DeleteAlso, last year the cut off for OCSC was 169.5.

ReplyDeleteresonance has got ques 12,23,30,44,47,51,56,60,70 totally wrong and probably Q 68 also.
ReplyDeleteYes. Glad to know that you also feel so
DeleteI don't know about the other questions, but I do know enough chemistry to say that they've got question 51 totally wrong. :P
ReplyDeleteThe official answers will be out today, lets see.
resonance has also got q.no. 65 wrong
ReplyDeleteTotally wrong, koi bhi calculation lgakar mera 10^8 nahi aa rha, I wonder woh log woh option kyon diye hain. :D

ReplyDeleteI had 334, and it matched perfectly with 337.
DeleteYeah, the IAPT people seem to be toying with us.
DeletePlz post d official answers for code 334
ReplyDeleteIAPT publishes the answers for only 1 code, but you can always download the question paper of that code from their website and match.
DeleteHowever, the answers aren't out yet. They were supposed to publish it on 30th, then that date was postponed due to MP elections. The note on the site said that it was to be published yesterday, but I see no solutions. So I think they are late.
I will link you to the QP and Answers as soon as they are out. :-)
http://www.iapt.org.in/index.php/90-news-update/4515-2013-papers-solutions.html
DeleteCheck kar lo, 334 ka hi hai. Lucky You!
Are questionss 17,52,55,69 and 77 correct ?
ReplyDelete77 is correct, rest I'll let you know by 6 PM... Will have to do some reading.
DeleteQ.77 - The answer according to the answer key is - a) RQ will rise.
DeleteIt should be b) RQ will fall
Sources -
A) NCERT Class XI , cpt 14 - Respiration in Plants - 14.7 - Respiratory Quotient:
RQ = (volume of carbon dioxide evolved / volume of oxygen consumed )
B) Campbell Biology, 9e, Cpt 9 - Cellular Respiration and Fermentation - Lactic Acid Fermentation-
During lactic acid fermentation (occurs in human muscle cells), pyruvate is directly reduced by NADH to form lactate as an end product, with no release of carbon dioxide. Thus, the numerator of RQ will fall and in turn, RQ will fall.
But isn't the denominator supposed to fall too? Its an anaerobic process.
Delete@77: But thats not all, its not like the cells shift to anaerobic process totally, any oxygen they can acquire, they use to metabolize sugar.
DeleteFor that, RQ= 1.
I think our new RQ will lie somewhere in between those 2 values.
@55:
DeleteCoral Reef: 2500g/m^2/yr.
Tropical Rain Forests: 2200g/m^2/yr.
I guess thats all you need to answer this question.
@69: Gills are osmoregulatory.
DeleteAnd respiratory too.
So I think option (d) is fine, but if you are grammatically inclined and are opposed to the use of "only", yes, the question seems wrong.
@52: Both b and c options should've been awarded marks, I'm sure they will make edits, or else we'll have to bring this to their notice.
DeleteWhats ur score btw? And state?
DeleteAnd class?
I'm for class XI Maharashtra. I'm getting 115. But last year's Maharashtra cutoff was 96. And they selected 67 from Maharashtra last year. So hopefully I'm in the safe zone (fingers crossed)
DeleteAbout Q.55 -
DeleteAccording to - Campbell Biology, 9e, Cpt 55 - Ecosystems and Restoration Ecology- Gross and Net Production
"Tropical rain forests are among the most productive terrestrial ecosystems and contribute a large portion of the planet’s net primary production. Estuaries and coral reefs also have very high net primary production, but their contribution to the global total
is small because these ecosystems cover only about one-tenth the area covered by tropical rain forests."
@pratyush - could you cite the source of your data?
Delete@55: The question demanded an answer in per m^2, that is per unit area.
DeleteIts like population and population density, get it?
The sources of my data, hoof, thats a difficult question.
DeleteI Googled up most of the things, I prefer that over opening books.
All except that coral reef one come from wikipedia.
The coral reef one was part of a research paper or article I downloaded, but it'll be tough tasking looking for it now.

ReplyDeleteFollowing the stats, you've successfully beaten last year's cutoff by a margin of 4 questions, I think you surely have a chance!
DeleteGuys, please can you state ur class when next you comment? That'll really help guessing the cut-offs, thank you.
ReplyDelete12 for me...guys post ur marks ,too!!
ReplyDeleteThen, naturally, 11thers in general will have lower score.
ReplyDeleteI do not know about ur state, but had you been in mine, there would've been a 90% chance that you'd be selected!
One of my friends here is scoring 120,
ReplyDeleteAnd another one is scoring 126.
Both are from class 12.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI'm inclined to think the 2012 one was tougher. But then, maybe because I was in class 11.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteGo thru campbell, most of the experiments and investigations there form the basis of questions.
DeleteBuy some indian biostat book, like the one the students use to prepare the night before exams. And I'm sure you'll do the same, biostat is boring, but 2 easy questions will require its basic understanding.
Make any one topic ur forte, like I love cytology and genetics, so I used to read a lot on the internet and solve questions from here amd there.
And make full use of ur teachers, question them about dyes, lab procedures and basically everything that can have a reason behind it and is related to biology.
A lot can be done... But we both are in 12th this year, we won't have time to do all what's possible.
ReplyDeleteYou too must be preparing for medical entrance, I assume?
I'm getting 149, I'm from Haryana and in class 12. Will I clear this round?
ReplyDeleteLast year the cutoff was 131, but the paper was tougher.
DeleteKeep ur fingers crossed, you do have a chance I feel.

DeleteI think I'll get in.
DeleteI have started studying from Campbell, even If I don't get in It'll help me with the PMTs.
How many marks did you get last year? Were you selected?
133 in NSEB, 172 in INBO.
DeleteYes, I went thru both.
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteIt was tremendous fun, and I got to learn a few decent tricks. Especially practicals were fantastic.
DeleteI think I've answered that question of yours, on Quora.
Tricks in practicals basically....
DeleteLike how to cut finer sections, and how to cut them faster.
Micropippet was something entirely new to me.
Learnt a little biostat too.
Then there are many small things of help, I learnt there. Most of which I fail to remember now.
Pastries are tasty, lolololol
ReplyDeleteThey were irresistible! :D
DeleteI am getting 110. 11th standard from Maharashtra. Last years cut off was 96 but many people were saying paper easy this year but still do i have the slightest possibility of getting through??
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWe're in the same boat then. :) I'm also in Std. 11th from Maharashtra. I'm getting 115.

ReplyDeleteINBO - Indian National Biology Olympiad test series
ReplyDeletehttp://www.aryanclasses.com/NSE-Biology.html
What was the cutoff for INBO last year?
ReplyDelete169.5.
DeleteHow to prepare for INBO? Especially the genetics and Biostat part?
ReplyDeleteGenetics is not very tough... Campell plus a little knowledge of probability should do the trick.
DeleteBiostat, get a thin book of a local writer, solve a few questions from Chi sqaure distribution, as far as I remember very basic questions are asked.
thank god for this blog!
ReplyDeleteokay,Ive gotten into inbo and I think barely..but bio is my passion.im in class 12,Karnataka...so need a lot of advice
1.what is the pattern of the test?no. of questions and how are the two sections different?
2.is there negative marking?
3.reccommended books?
please do reply:)lots of thankyous!
thank you so much!
Pattern:
DeleteThere are no subjective questions but you may need too draw a little.
Sec A is primarily MCQs. Sec B demands integer type answers/one words/numbers.
There is negative marking.
Books:
Campbell.
do both sections have negative marking?
Deletewhat are the things you absolutely must know for the Olympiad?how should I start the inbo paper-sec a first or sec b?tricks n tips from seniors please!
ReplyDeleteYou must understand evolution, and have a lot lot lot of common sense.
DeleteYou'll have to use reason along with knowledge...
Start with sec a I would say, but it's your choice... I always like my pudding first, hence sec a. Sec B is rather confusing.
thank you:)what is the cutoff for the next stage?
DeleteI read that only students who clear a particular cut off in sec a are considered for evaluating their sec b...is it true?
ReplyDeleteI cant find previous yrs papars..except for 2010 and 2012.can anybody give the link of other inbo papers.
ReplyDeleteshare your preparation strategy inbo ppl! :)
ReplyDeleteany method for a quick and effective study of cellular respiration? i am in 11th and i dont know a thing about it:p
ReplyDeleteHow was the paper guys?
ReplyDeleteLengthy. Awfully lengthy!
DeleteTrue....i fluked many questions in section b:P
ReplyDeleteHow exactly is the scoring scheme of Part B? Suppose there's a question of 3 points... there are 3 columns to be filled. Do we get 1 point for a correct column or what?
ReplyDeleteYes, that exactly is the scheme, in most such questions, atleast.
DeleteUsually its mentioned on the paper.
If its not, I think marks will be distributed homogeneously.
Those who are giving the exam for second time - did you think the paper was more easy than last year's paper? What's your judgement about the cutoff?
ReplyDeleteCutoff will fall. Or it should fall, atleast.
DeleteThe paper was a tad bit tougher and was much lengthier this year.
Key has been uploaded.

what would be expected cut off....cause i am getting far less marks than last years cut off:p
ReplyDeleteIts alright Ajeya, we all are getting far less than what we expected before seeing the paper.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are in 11th standard, so cheerio, you have one more year! :D
Sigh. Okay. Chalo, sab koi apne apne marks btao... And cutoffoff neeche jaana chahiye pichle saal se, but ek fact yeh bhi hai ki waisa kabhi hua nahi pehle.
ReplyDeleteMujhe 185 aa rhe hain.
I too am getting really low marks... :( but it really was an awesome experience... pratyush tu to definitely select hoga to...
ReplyDeleteNahi yaar, 200 pohochta toh sure hota, abhi tph suspense waala haal hai.
ReplyDeleteHo bhi gye toh bda close margin se honge.
getting 145 no chance...
ReplyDeleteGetting 129 :(
ReplyDeleteHas anyone received his /her score card?
ReplyDeleteyeah no chance post your marks -135
ReplyDelete143 :( any chances..?
ReplyDeletei really want to go that lab praktyush was so lucky and he wasted it
ReplyDeletePerspective.
DeleteI had a lot of fun and learned in equal proportion.
Yes, in deliberate ways, I did squander my chance for selection. But it was never my objective to get selected for IBO.
I'm getting 185/291 acc. to the score card. What are you guys getting?
ReplyDeleteHey, I got d card, 184 on 291 in INBO 2014. What are the chances?
ReplyDelete190.5/291 acc. to the score card...is it enough????
ReplyDeleteyou people are genius to get that high, how did you study, any tips
ReplyDeleteAny news or idea of the expected cutoff this year??
ReplyDeleteHow many of you are scoring above 150??
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI am scoring 159 in INBO. Any hope?
ReplyDeletewhat would be the probably cut off this year?
what has been the cut off for the last few years?
196/291.
ReplyDeleteThough earlier I was sure about the cutoff falling, butbut afterafter reading allall your marks- not sure, it may justjust rise, as it always has.
Last years cut- 169.5.
Hey, the results are announced. Cutoff in 2014 is 151.5/291. Cheers and Congrats to all Winners.
ReplyDeleteCongoz to all the winners! :D
ReplyDeleteCant wait to meet everyone at mumbai...!! :P
So any of u know when are the letters dipatched for ocsc??
P.S. seniors...some tips please?
I got selected too!!!
ReplyDelete:D
Congrats Arnav, J, Viswanadh, Manan and Anonymous! :D
ReplyDeleteLookin forward to our excursion in Mum.!!!!
ReplyDelete2nd timers some tips will do!?

I have made a list of experiments we had to perform,
Deletehttp://wp.me/P3kBsH-3i
I hope it helps.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all those who are selected!
ReplyDeletewhen are the letters dispatched?
and Pratyush could you please give more details about the proceedings of the camp?
and also maybe you could suggest what to do before coming to the camp...
Deletewhat book(s) would you suggest?
The ratio of distribution of marks is 60:40::theory:pracs.
DeleteThe camp is divided into classes and test days.
Guest teachers- sometimes famous researchers- take a theory class for the first 4-5 hours.
They give us a question paper and ask us to mark the answers:
This takes about 30 minutes.
Discussion of the paper follows.
If there is time left, they ask the students what would they like to learn about, and then teach.
After lunch, we proceed to the labs.
The first few lab days are dedicated to teaching us lab skills and procedures and they call it "Orientation".
Orientations last for upto 5 hours sometimes and leave you really tired.
But they are fun. The instruments are world-class.
Olympus microscopes, micro-pipettes, etc.
Thanks a lot!
Deleteand lastly, what would you recommend doing before coming to the camp? like do/see some practicals or read certain things...
JIPMER Entrance Exam date out- 8th June. Anyone applying for it? If yes, please contact HBCSE regarding this so that they may postpone the camp.
ReplyDeleteAlso, did anyone receive their selection letter? When are they usually sent?
Let every one write HBCSE separate letters to differ the OCSC schedule (considering JIPMER test date of 8th June) so that they can respond positively.
ReplyDeleteDamn. Hum toh apna tickets bhi le liye hain. :P
ReplyDeleteChalo, I hope they postpone the camp...
Else attendance will be severely hit.
And yeah, I'll be writing a mail too...
I already called HBCSE. They did not give any confirmation regarding postponement of dates, but said they would try to arrange something. Rather vague, really.
ReplyDeleteAnd Pratyush, you have already booked tickets? So selection letter aa gaya? I haven't received mine yet.
ReplyDeleteDates aa gya tha. Letter me kuch khaas nahi rehta.
DeleteOfficial significance hai letter hai, but practical, hardly.
To whom we should send our grievance letters/ mails?
ReplyDeleteIs this ID is appropriate? nc_olympiad@hbcse.tifr.res.in
I believe that should be the right id. I will be sending my mail on that one too.
ReplyDeleteI have sent the mail. You all do the same, and let's hope they make a favourable decision.
ReplyDeleteMy dad spoke to Prof Vijay A. Singh, National Coordinator, HBCSE reg deferment of OCSC schedule to appear JIPMER at our places. Prof confirmed that deferment is not possible. Advised to opt the JIPMER center at Mumbai.
ReplyDeleteI have not decided what to do. Anyway, I am sending a mail to nc_olympiad@hbcse.tifr.res.in requesting deferment of OCSC schedule. All of you, please do send mails to HBCSE.
I've sent a mail too. And will tey to call him.
DeleteIf they won't change the dates... I think I'd be giving it a miss.
Giving what a miss? Surely not the entrance exam.
DeleteGiving the OCSC a miss. :(
DeleteBut, won't they arrange something? They have indeed asked us to choose Mumbai as our center. They probably have something in mind, then.
DeleteYes, they will arrange a day's leave for you to give your entrance examination, that's for sure. And travel.
DeleteBut, if you are really serious about JIPMER ( its my third favorite after AIIMS and MAMC), then you can't really expect to give the exam midOCSC.
You'll hardly get any time to revise and OCSC is pretty tiring too.
But then, greater the risk greater the returns.
& my reasons may not apply to majority of the students.
so you mean the dates on the website are final? or just tentative?
ReplyDeleteanyone got the letter with the actual dates yet?
It sure seems like the dates are final as I received my selection letter this morning.
ReplyDeleteBtw, even students from Mumbai get accommodation, right? It will be hellish if they make us travel everyday.
Yeah, they do get accommodation.
Deleteguys....in delhi all jipmer centers are finished...i'll have to go to ghaziabad or noida...
ReplyDeletesilly hbcse....cant they provide a satisfactory response!!
Hell! Is there a jipmer center i mumbai anyway? I hear the nearest one is at nagpur!!!
ReplyDeleteThere is a JIPMER center in Mumbai. I filled the form already, hence can say for sure.
Deleteanyone of you from delhi who has filled the jipmer form ??
ReplyDeleteI was about to appear for the test at Delhi, thanks to your update, I moved to Bhubneshwar.
ReplyDeleteSilly HBCSE. Haha.
Anyone of you who will be attending the Camp for sure?
I will. Also, I am not sure I understand what you mean when you say JIPMER centers unavailable. As in they are all booked in Delhi?
DeleteYes
DeleteI will..............but i dont know whether to fill mumbai as a center or gurgaon or faridabad?
ReplyDeleteIf i dont fill fast even mumbai centers will get finished.... :(
Does anyone have the mobile number of Prof Vijay Singh or anyone else in hbcse? I need to fill the form urgently.
P.S. Have they confirmed that we choose mumbai as test center and they will surely arrange something?
Anonymous- How many centers are there in mumbai?
Prof Vijay A. Singh, National Coordinator, HBCSE, Phone: 022-25482104, 25072322. He has clearly told that HBCSE gives permission to attend JIMPER in Mumbai. That is the reason, he has suggested to opt Mumbai as center.
ReplyDeleteBtw, Pratyush, did u attend OCSC last year and could u make it to IBO2013? How much time we might get from 4 to 7 June to prepare JIPMER while attending OCSC.
You don't really get any time. The schedules are jampacked.
DeleteObviously, you can study for 4-5 hours a day, in the evening, late at night, early morning...
The classes go 8AM to 6PM and additional time for dinner. Say 1 hr.
The rest you can use for preparation.
But the days are tiring, those hours may not be very effective.
Its a risk. Sometimes, especially 4th and 5th, the 6PM line may not hold good.
I didn't make it to the IBO, but I did attend the Camp.
I am desperate to attend OCSC and at teh same time, I can not take lightly JIPMER. Is it true, if we dont fill mumbai center fast, will it get finished?
ReplyDeleteyes...i am filling it now..!
DeleteWhat are you waiting for? Fill it asap!
Now it is official, it is not tentative. The final OCSC, Biology scedule is June 4 – 12, 2014 as per HBCSE site.
ReplyDeleteI don't really know much beyond the fact that Mumbai IS a center. I suggest you fill the form giving Mumbai as the first choice. If you are keen on doing both, that is.
ReplyDeleteI have done so!! I hope I get a convenient center........
DeleteP.S. Are you a resident of Mumbai?
Yes. To be precise, Thane. It's a suburb of Mumbai.
DeleteThe dates shant be postponed. They are final.
ReplyDeleteHowever i had sent a mail requesting them to provide conveyance........they have agreed.
conveyance till jipmer center*
DeleteThat is as good as it can get, actually.
DeleteWhich city are you from?
New delhi
DeleteI am from Hyderabad. Got the selection letter. Decided to attend OCSC and appear JIPMER at Mumbai. Booked my ticket as well. I will report HBCSE by 6pm on 3rd June. Opted JIPMER exam city as Mumbai and Pune. Eager to see you all at HBCSE.
ReplyDeleteguys i am frm class 10 .. i am new to all of this .. can someone plssss giude me for individual registeration for NSEB!!! thanks and regards
ReplyDeleteGuys....the jipmer hall tickets are out..
ReplyDeleteCheck your centers and post them here asap!
If they are nearby we can ask hbcse to arrange conveyence..!
P.S. Anonymous...how far is bandra east from our hbcse quarters?? Any idea??
My JIPMER exam centre is at Pravin Patil College of Diploma Engineering and Technology, Bhayandar (East). The exam center is about 45km from HBCSE. Post ur centers too.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteAnyone here registered for NSEB from gurgaon? Having a hard time getting to register. None of the schools I have contacted will do NSEB registration as they don't have any students from their own school. Any help will be highly appreciated.
How was the Olympiad?
ReplyDeleteCool.
DeleteWhat's your status?
Getting 150. In maharashtra . Any chance???
ReplyDeleteDid you get in?
DeleteI got 171 from Maharastra itself.
I cleared for INBO.
All the best.
what will be the cut off for this year's inbo (2015) ?
ReplyDeleteShould be around the same as last year.
ReplyDeleteThe paper was equally tough but awfully more lengthy!
Upload your marks after checking with the answer key today at 5pm
I am getting 170. And yeah the paper was too length. Couldnt even read the ethology and ecology part. Had to leave them. What about you?
DeleteGetting around 170 what are the chances? I totally agree..the paper was quite lengthy!
ReplyDeleteI'm getting 147.5. So most likely I'm out. :P
ReplyDeletefingers crossed :P
ReplyDeletehow do i calculate the inbo marks from answer keys for sec b
ReplyDeletegetting around 155.7 is there any chance
ReplyDelete^how can one get marks like .7 ? I think marks shoould be multiples of 1.5?
ReplyDeletesorry it is 155
ReplyDeletewhat is the predicted cut off this year?
expected cut off this year....
ReplyDeleteLets hope that the cut off really falls below 150 this year. Paper was lengthy.
Deletei am getting 165. Is there any chance?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the total after frozen stage
ReplyDeleteSame...the haven't changed any of the solutions right?
ReplyDeleteseems so no change
ReplyDeletewhen will the cut off be known
ReplyDeleteDid anyone get the score cards by mail? I'm getting 152. Any chance?
ReplyDeletegetting 169.5 what are the chances ?
ReplyDeletegot the score card .getting only 154.5 :(
ReplyDeleteplease post your marks so that we can guess the cut off
ReplyDelete
